So it is Saturday morning and we're still trying to write the song due to be released tomorrow (tonight at midnight, actually). That's the problem when you're being creative on a deadline, especially a deadline like one new song a week, for example. You kinda have to, well, write one new song a week.And when schedules interfere, and you have a little bit of songwriters block, what do you do? How do you provoke the creative process, and bend it to your will? That's kind of the purpose of this experiment - to discover something about our creative depths.
One of the great things about doing this, though, is that we get to explore lots of different styles and song forms that we might not otherwise try. It's one thing to write one new song a week, for one week. It's another to do it consistently, time after time after time.
When I first started writing songs, I would often write 3 a day. As I became more concerned with quality, my songwriting standards increased, and my song production dropped as my songwriting quality soared (by my standards, anyway).
It got to the point I was only writing one every few months, when something struck me. But I realized that this had a downside: by not constantly writing, I often let ideas languish, and let my songwriting skills get rusty.
It was time to wake up my creativity again. Maybe it was just the Winter, but I needed reinvigorated.
So here we are, writing one new song a week. And here we are, waiting to see what will be released tonight.
Wait and see. That's what we're doing.
